Beachview Place is a condominium complex located at the north end of Geneva Street in St. Catharines. It consists of two buildings, each six storeys high, and connected by a lovely pentagonal atrium where the main entrance is located.
The two buildings are situated right on the shores of Lake Ontario and beside the Waterfront Trail which hugs the shoreline here. Residents can easily access the trail simply by slipping out the back door or rounding the building to connect with adjacent paths.
The views from our building are terrific. Residents on the lake side are treated to breathtaking sunsets, icy rock formations along the wintry shores, gulls and ducks swooping and diving into the water, and lines of ocean-going ships and lakers waiting to enter the Welland Canal a few miles away during most of the year. People on the street side overlook a park and a lovely settled neighborhood on quiet, tree-lined streets, and can watch the sun rise in the morning and the flashing light from the lighthouse at the Welland Canal at night. All of us see scores of birds, especially in the springtime, and flocks of monarch butterflies in late summer.
One of our largest committees is our Gardening Committee. These hardworking individuals have collaborated to do an outstanding job in revitalizing our extensive grounds and regularly changing the plants in the decorative urns and flower gardens. An herb gardens perfumes the air around our two sheltered barbecues, while indoor plants on the main floor are cultivated by one dedicated resident.
Beachview Place is above all an old-fashioned neighbourhood.
We have a Social Committee, whose job is to build community here, whether through news and videos, or through barbecues, happy hours and special celebrations. Last summer the committee organized outdoor games on the back lawn, and on Canada Day and Remembrance Day, many of the residents gathered around our new flagpole for a short ceremony and the raising of the Canadian flag. One resident spent hours sewing and stringing together hundreds of red and white triangles to decorate the pool area where the flag raising ceremony was to be held.
Just down the hall from the Atrium is our Board Room, which has been used not only by the boards of the two condo buildings, but by individuals who have had to use it as a temporary office during renovations, by the team who produce our Beachview Newsletter, and even by game players at times. The newsletter provides reports from the various committees that work for the benefit of the community, articles of local interest, and biographies of the residents, who have a wealth of experience, and fascinating, very diverse backgrounds. Faces we would normally pass in the hallways become people we recognize and respect and want to get to know.
We also have a nice library full of books donated by residents, and curated by a small team of volunteers, and a well-equipped little gym which looks out on the outdoor patio and barbecues, heated pool and beyond to Lake Ontario.
The complex is governed by two corporations, NNCC 35 and NNCC43 which work together to manage the beautiful property and shared facilities. Dealing with a 35-year-old building, no matter how well-constructed and beautiful, requires foresight and occasional hard decisions. Beachview Place is currently upgrading all of its windows and doors, and will soon embark on replacing all the hot- and cold-water pipes.
Always trying to think ahead, the Boards have facilitated this website for the use of residents and visitors, and have recently set up an ad hoc committee to study the feasibility of installing EV charging infrastructure in the indoor garage areas as a step forward into our electric vehicle future.
Beachview Place residents want and need our home to be a true neighbourhood, and we are proud that in this we have truly succeeded.
